Gili Air Harbour & East Coast

Where the boats land and the island comes to life

Everything on Gili Air starts at the harbour on the south-east coast. Public boats from Bangsal, fast boats from Bali and the inter-island shuttles all land on the beach here, and the cidomo carts line up to take luggage to hotels. Around it are the ticket offices, dive schools, minimarts, ATMs and the island’s busiest stretch of warungs and cafés.

North of the harbour, the east coast is Gili Air’s most sociable beach: a string of restaurants, juice bars and bamboo platforms right on the sand, with some of the island’s best snorkelling a few metres offshore — and the full width of Lombok, crowned by Mount Rinjani, across the water.

Top things to do at Gili Air Harbour & East Coast

Watch the sunrise over Rinjani

Up early? The east coast faces the sunrise, with the silhouette of Rinjani on the far side of the strait. The water is usually glassy at dawn.

Eat at the local warungs

Behind the harbour, small family warungs serve nasi campur, mie goreng, grilled fish and sambal for a fraction of beachfront prices. The night food stalls are a good place to try local dishes.

Snorkel straight from the beach

The reef drops off close to shore along the east coast — one of the best places for turtle snorkelling without a boat.

Book boats and dives

The harbour ticket office sells public boat tickets and island-hopping shuttles; the dive centres along the coast book fun dives and courses.

Insider tips

  • Ignore anyone at the harbour who insists you need to pay them to “register” or to use a particular cidomo — only buy boat tickets at the official counter or from your operator.
  • The ATMs near the harbour are the most reliable on the island, but they can still run dry at weekends. Bring cash from Bali or Lombok as a backup.
  • The call to prayer from the mosque starts before dawn — pick a room further from it if you are a light sleeper.

Gili Air Harbour & East Coast FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Where do the boats arrive on Gili Air?

At the harbour beach on the south-east corner of the island. There is no jetty for most boats — expect to step off into shallow water, so keep your shoes and bags ready.

Is the harbour area a good place to stay?

It is the most convenient: close to boats, dive schools, ATMs and restaurants. It is also the busiest and noisiest part of a very quiet island.

Are there ATMs on Gili Air?

Yes, a few, mostly near the harbour and along the east coast. They can run out of cash or go offline, so do not rely on them alone.
