Gili Air is small enough that you can pick your sky: the east coast faces Lombok and the sunrise over Mount Rinjani, while the west and north-west coasts — the “sunset side” — look across the Lombok Strait to Bali. On a clear evening the sun drops right beside the cone of Mount Agung, Bali’s highest volcano.
By day this side of the island is the quiet one: fewer boats, fewer people and long stretches of sand under the trees. Around 5 pm the beach bars bring out beanbags, rope swings and low tables in the shallows, and a good part of the island drifts over to watch the show with a coconut or a cold Bintang.
Top things to do at Gili Air Sunset Coast
Claim a beanbag for sundown
The bars along the west coast compete to have the best sunset seat. Arrive half an hour early to get one in the front row, order something cold and wait for Agung to turn purple.
Swim and snorkel in the quiet hours
The north-west coast has patches of reef close to shore. Snorkel in the morning when the sea is flattest; in the afternoon the current and the wind can pick up.
Cycle the loop at golden hour
Start from the harbour late afternoon, ride clockwise round the north of the island and arrive on the sunset side just in time. See our island loop guide.
Watch the sunset from the water
For a sunset with turtles first, join a sunset snorkelling cruise — they leave from Gili T, a short hop away.

How to get to Gili Air Sunset Coast
- From the harbour: 15–25 minutes on foot along the coast path, around 10 minutes by bicycle or a short cidomo ride.
- After dark: the inland paths are unlit — carry a torch or use your phone light if you walk back through the village.
Insider tips
- At low tide the water on the west side can get very shallow and rocky; the swimming is best around high tide.
- The best sunset colours are usually in the dry season (April–October), when the air is clear enough to see Agung.
- Sunset bars are relaxed about you ordering just one drink, but it is polite to order something if you take a beanbag.
- Bring mosquito repellent for the evening.
