Boats moored off a white-sand beach at Gili Nanggu, west Lombok

Sekotong & the Southwest Gilis

The Gilis before the crowds

The long Sekotong peninsula in southwest Lombok is fringed with small islands the locals also call Gilis: Gili Nanggu, Gili Sudak, tiny Gili Kedis, the larger Gili Gede and others. With a few simple resorts and homestays, clear water and hardly any visitors, they feel like the Gilis must have felt decades ago.

Most people visit on a snorkelling boat trip from the Sekotong coast, stopping at three or four islands for reefs, white sandbars and a seafood lunch. From Gili Air it is a long way — best as a stop on a slower tour of Lombok.

Island-hop by boat

A day on a local boat visiting Nanggu, Sudak and Kedis is the classic. Kedis is so small you can walk around it in minutes.

Snorkel quiet reefs

Gili Nanggu in particular has good snorkelling close to the beach.

Stay overnight

A night or two on Gili Gede or Gili Nanggu is the ultimate escape — expect simple facilities.

Sekotong & the Southwest Gilis FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Are the southwest Gilis the same as the Gili Islands?

No. “Gili” simply means small island in Sasak. The famous three are off north-west Lombok; the Sekotong Gilis are a separate group off the south-west.

Is Sekotong worth visiting?

If you have time on Lombok and love quiet beaches, yes. It is far less developed than the three main Gilis.
