Senaru Waterfalls

Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep, in the forest below Rinjani

The village of Senaru sits at around 600 metres on the green northern slopes of Rinjani, and it is the start of the most rewarding short walk on Lombok. A path drops through the forest to Sendang Gile, a tall two-tiered waterfall in a jungle gorge, then continues — along an irrigation channel and across a stream or two — to Tiu Kelep, a wide curtain of water falling into a pool you can swim in.

It is the easiest Lombok day trip from Gili Air: under two hours by road from Bangsal, with the added bonus of the drive along the north coast, rice terraces and views of the volcano.

Top things to do at Senaru Waterfalls

Walk to Sendang Gile

Around 15–20 minutes down a stepped path from the entrance. The easiest waterfall to reach, suitable for most visitors.

Continue to Tiu Kelep and swim

Another 30–45 minutes on a rougher path with river crossings. The pool at the bottom is cold and refreshing — the spray is powerful in the wet season.

Visit a traditional village

Near Senaru and Bayan are Sasak villages with traditional houses and one of Lombok’s oldest mosques, a reminder of the island’s Wetu Telu heritage.

How to get to Senaru Waterfalls

  • From Gili Air: boat to Bangsal, then around 1.5–2 hours by car. A guided day trip with pickup is the simplest option.
  • Entrance: a small entry fee is charged at the park gate; local guides are available (and advisable for Tiu Kelep).

Insider tips

  • Wear shoes that can get wet — sandals with straps or water shoes are ideal.
  • The waterfalls are at their most dramatic in the wet season but the paths are slippery; in the dry season flow is lower but the walk is easier.
  • Bring a dry bag for your phone; the spray at Tiu Kelep soaks everything.
